History on MV Rachel Corrie

In News and Updates on June 3, 2010 at 12:10 am

Rachel Corrie is a 499 GT coaster owned and operated by the Irish arm of the Free Gaza Movement.[1] It was originally called Carsten and has also carried the names Norasia Attika and Manya. The Perdana Global Peace Organisation in Malaysia raised much of the funds from the people of Malaysia for the purchase of this ship.

The ship was built as yard number 625 by J J Sietas, Germany. She was completed in May 1967. She is 68.43 metres (224 ft 6 in) long, with a beam of 10.52 metres (34 ft 6 in) and a depth of 6.25 metres (20 ft 6 in). The ship is powered by a Deutz diesel engine which can propel her at 12.5 knots (23.2 km/h).[2]

After being seized by the High Court on behalf of the ITF, the ship was sold at auction in Dundalk for €70,000 to the Free Gaza Movement on 30 March 2010. This enabled ITF Inspector Ken Fleming to pay the crew their arrears.

It was outfitted at Brown’s Quay in Dundalk, Ireland, for use in a voyage to Gaza. While there, a significant amount of navigational equipment worth between €15,000 and €20,000 was stolen from the vessel.[3]

It was named in honour of Rachel Corrie and launched on 12 May 2010 from Dundalk.[9][10]

It set sail for Gaza as part of a flotilla with stated intentions of directly confronting Egypt-Israel’s blockade of Gaza and bringing in few basic supplies. The vessel (carrying cement and other supplies as cargo) lagged behind from the other ships and was not one of the ships boarded by the Israeli military on 31 May 2010.

There are 5 Malaysians (PGPO members Shamsul Akmar, Matthias Chang, Faizal Azumu; Member of Parliament Nizar Zakaria, TV reporter Abdul Halim and camerman Jufri Judin) and 5 Irish activists on board: Nobel laureate Maireád Corrigan-Maguire, former UN Assistant Secretary General Denis Halliday, film maker Fiona Thompson and husband and wife Derek and Jenny Graham.
